The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is Canada’s national hazard communication standard. The key elements of the system are:
- cautionary labelling of containers of WHMIS “controlled products”,
- the provision of material safety data sheets (MSDSs)
- and worker education and training programs.
WHMIS is federally legislated training required for any workers who manufacture, work with, or are in proximity to controlled products in their workplace.
The employer has the legal obligation to ensure that his/her workers have received both generic WHMIS education as well as the necessary site-specific training.
